If you trap the enemies lightsaber with the crossguard the metal portions and probably the whole saber will just get destroyed unless it's made of cortosis or another lightsaber withstanding alloy in which case a cortosis cross guard would make more sense to begin with. It's not the volatile nature of the cross guard that irks me, a force user who spent a lot of time training with it wouldn't hurt him/herself with it.
